About this product

Description

Obagi Tretinoin Gel 0.05% is a prescription-only medicine containing tretinoin, a retinoid (retinoic acid, a vitamin A derivative), in a fragrance-free aqueous gel base. Each 20 g tube contains tretinoin 0.05%. According to its prescribing information, tretinoin gel is indicated for topical application in the treatment of acne vulgaris.

It is supplied only after a consultation with our prescriber, who will decide whether it and this strength are suitable for you. It must be used exactly as directed and is for topical use only.

Key ingredients
Tretinoin 0.05%A retinoid (retinoic acid, a vitamin A derivative); the active ingredient.
Gel basePurified water, glycerin, carbomer homopolymer type C, trolamine, sodium hyaluronate, fish collagen hydrolysates, octoxynol 9, benzyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, butylated hydroxytoluene and parabens (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl- and isobutylparaben).
How to use

Use exactly as directed by your prescriber. Apply once a day, usually at bedtime, to the areas where acne appears; your prescriber may advise starting less often if your skin is sensitive. Wash with a mild cleanser, pat dry and wait until the skin is completely dry before applying. Use a pea-sized amount to cover the affected area thinly. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth, angles of the nose and mucous membranes. Do not apply more often or in larger amounts than directed. Minimise sun exposure, avoid sunbeds and sunlamps, and protect treated skin with sunscreen and clothing.

FAQs
What side effects can tretinoin gel cause?

Some redness, peeling, dryness or stinging may occur, particularly in the early weeks. In sensitive individuals the skin may become excessively red, swollen, blistered or crusted, and temporary lightening or darkening of the skin has been reported. Acne may appear to worsen at first. If irritation is severe or persistent, stop using it and contact your prescriber. It should not be applied to eczematous or sunburnt skin. Do not use it if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Is the gel suitable if I have a fish allergy?

The gel base contains fish collagen hydrolysates. Tell our prescriber if you have a fish allergy so they can decide whether it is suitable for you.

Does tretinoin make my skin more sensitive to the sun?

Yes. Exposure to sunlight, including sunlamps, should be minimised. Use sunscreen and protective clothing over treated areas, and if you become sunburnt, stop treatment until your skin has recovered. Wind and cold may also irritate treated skin.

Can I use tretinoin if I am pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding?

You should not use it if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. UK product information for licensed topical medicines containing tretinoin states they must not be used during pregnancy or by women planning a pregnancy, and that treatment should be stopped if pregnancy occurs. As a precaution it should also be avoided while breastfeeding. Tell your prescriber straight away if you are pregnant, think you may be, or are breastfeeding.

Can I use other skincare products with it?

Use other medicines or products on your skin only on your prescriber's advice. Take care with medicated or abrasive cleansers, strongly drying products, high-alcohol products, astringents, and preparations containing sulfur, resorcinol or salicylic acid.
